1 I The Belles VOLUME XLV NUMBER 2 9M HILLSBOROUGH STREET. ST. MARY’S COLLEGE. RALEIGH. N.C. Of StMciry; Cdl^e NOVEMBER 4, 1985 VESTRY New Chaplain to Arrive on Campus by Frannye Fowle News Editor On November 1, our new Chaplain, Janet Watrous, will arrive at St. Mary’s to serve as our campus chaplain, con ducting the Wednesday and Sunday ser vices, as well as contributing to the cam pus life. Mrs. Watrous, along with her husband and two children, will reside in the chaplain’s home on campus. Her of fice will be located in the existing chap lain’s office, 010 Lower Smedes. When Mrs. Watrous visited St. Mary’s in late September, she relayed a sense of excitement, both in her Wednesday morning service and in her informal meal talks with the various clubs at St. Mary’s. Watrous and the vestry met together and discussed tentative plans for the months of November, December, and second semester. Many exciting ideas were brought up during the meeting and hope fully the student body will begin to see a few changes by second semester. During the interim between Reverand Davis (SMC’s Chaplain 1984-85) and Mrs. Watrous, we have been honored by having many quest ministers enter our pulpit. On Wednesdays, Dr. Marty Smith generously shared her knowledge and led our morning prayer services. St. Mary’s had a variety of guests that led the Sun day services. We were honored to have such leaders as Captain Campbell, Sarah Campbell’s father, Mr. Bill Brettman from NCSU, Miss Camille Bishop, mem ber of our faculty, Mr. Roger Lee, not to mention other outstanding guests. St. Mary’s eagerly awaits Mrs. Watrous’s arrival, and it is certain that this year’s Vestry promises an exciting array of events. HONOR WEEK by Elizabeth C. Williams Editor-in-Chief The week of October 15 was Honor Week at St. Mary’s College. The week started off with formal chapel on Tues day night. Every stgdent took part in taking the Honor Oath, as well as signing the pledge, which states that all girls will abide by the Honor Code which governs every aspect of the St. Mary’s life. The following night Wednesday,' Octo ber 16, the faculty and the SGA officers met in every dorm to discuss with the students, “What is Honor?” Several sug gestions were made as to how the Judi cial Board can penilize those who violate the code through stealing, lying, or cheating. One idea discussed was that the guilty student would have to give the student body a public apology during Chapel. If she is apprehended again, on any infraction of the Honor Code, she will be expelled. The suggestion seemed to spark some interest in most girls. Al though these were just suggestions, they seemed to be good ones. After all, the Honor Code is for the benefit of the stu dents. Frannye Fowle shows her spirit for the Scoop Walk. Pittman Auditorium by Elizabeth C. Williams Editor-in-Chief It was a chilly, brisk evening in Sep tember. Students were scurrying to and fro. The Cold Cuts had been practicing in Pittman. Suddenly, a cry could be heard from inside-thc Auditorium. The Cold Cuts left the building. “Someone’s in the balcony!” exclaimed a student. The des criptions of the figure varied, but the pre dominant image portrayed was that of a woman in a long white gown and veil; she \«alked through the balcony on hushed footsteps. This is one of many tales told of the womanly ghost who vi sits Pittman frequently. Pittman Auditorium is one of the five buildings on the St. Mary’s campus that area North Carolina Historical site. Built in 1909, and named after Eliza Battle Pittman, the 600 seat auditorium has a long and enduring history. The auditorium was dedicated in mem- ory of Eliza by her mother. Eliza had at tended St. Mary’s and died at the age of 21, in 1889. Although no mention is made of the cause of death, it is highly possible that Miss Battle could have died shortly after graduating from St. Mary’s. If this holds true, her ghost could still be lingering in Pittman Auditorium. According to the book Ghosts in the Carolinas, ghosts often return to places they are very fond of. Another theory about Eliza could be that she was in volved in the performing arts while at tending St. Mary’s. In the early 1970’s, St. Mary’s toyed with the idea of tearing down Pittman. Some speculation re mains as to whether Eliza lives in Pitt man to keep an eye on the building which she holds dear to her heart. Sandy Stallings, drama teacher here at St. Mary’s, has her office in Pittman. Al though Mrs. Stallings has never seen any ghost, she does admit that Pittman is a very eery, dark, and lonely place on cold winter mornings when no one is around [Continued on Page 4] New Year’s in November by Alystre Julian Editorial Editor If anyone likes New Years’ Celebra tions, she should start getting excited about the upcoming SGA dance!
